Install ScaleArc on MS Azure

Follow these steps to install ScaleArc on MS Azure. Click here to set up an HA configuration.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

  • a Windows Azure subscription account.

Click here to install ScaleArc on MS Azure in an HA configuration.

Create a virtual machine

Use the ScaleArc image from the Azure Marketplace to create new virtual machine:

  1. Navigate to the Azure portal at https://portal.azure.com/ and log in.

  2. In the Azure portal, select New from the menu on left and search "Scalearc"  in the Azure Marketplace.

  3. Select the image to use, for example “ScaleArc for SQL Server.”

Configure the virtual machine

Where possible change the names for the services being used (for example, cloud service, availability set, resource group).

  1. Create the VM in the resource manager mode.

  2. Select the subscription to use for this VM (subscriptions are used for billing).
  3. Create a new resource group or add VM to an existing resource group. Resource groups are a collection of network and security policies defined for the group. Choose the location for the VM. The resources you add to the resource group are deployed to this location.

  4. Choose the size for the VM. Azure has different resource sizes . Here you can find the minimum requirements for ScaleArc. Review the definitions on each VM size and type on the azure website. For this demonstration, we have chosen A3, which meets the minimum requirements for the ScaleArc  production system.

  5. Define the virtual network and the create an availability set.

  6. Select an Availability set. Availability sets are used for HA and allow you to group VMs together to ensure availability in the event of an outage.

  7. Next, open #4 to review the summary page. Click OK to commit your selections.

  8. Open #5 to review the details and legal terms from Azure. Click Purchase to launch the instance.

  9. From the Azure dashboard click on "virtual machines"  and select your VM.

Log in to ScaleArc

This is the first time you are logging in to the ScaleArc system.

  1. Copy the public IP address assigned to access the VM.

  2. Browse to the IP address to set up ScaleArc.

  3. Proceed to the ScaleArc License Agreement screen. Read through the license and click Accept EULA.

  4. A successful network setup brings up the Welcome screen. You are now ready to initialize ScaleArc.

Below are comments for clarification/improvement observed during CSS RTO Process →

Serial numbers matches the numbers used in doc (for ease of identification)

Under "Configure the Virtual Machine" section, it says →

    1. Where possible change the names for the services being used (for example, cloud service, availability set, resource group).
→ Since we are providing a step by step guide of each step along with screenshots, this line can be more specific then rather being generic.

    2. → It talks about "Subscription", however, there must be mentioning of other fields too (ex: Name, VM disk type, User name etc)

    3. → Screenshot seems old, compare it with Azure portal please (I could not attach a new screenshot here for you reference as  do not have access to attach files/screnshots)

    4. → All good

    5. → There needs to be mentioning about "Storage", "Extensions" and "Monitoring" which are also present on this screen. Maybe a note saying, "choose the default or modify accordingly".

    6. → Please verify if screenshot is current

    7. → Do we need to call out #4 #5 as hitting OK automatically takes you to next step.
