Install ScaleArc on VMware

This section of the Guide provides instructions for installing ScaleArc on VMware. Note that your environment view may differ slightly from the screenshots included in this section.

Select a method

You can install ScaleArc on VMware by using either the ISO file with a manually provisioned virtual machine or by using the OVA. We recommend installing ScaleArc using the ISO for pre-production or production installations. The OVA is sized appropriately for smaller installations or demonstrations, but is faster and easier as it requires much less configuration and customization than the manually-driven ISO option. Also, review best practices for VM migration before you begin.

Install ScaleArc with OVA

Install ScaleArc on VMWare using the OVA template as follows:

Create a virtual machine

  1. Go to VMware host, click on File and select Deploy OVF template.

  2. Click on Browse and select the path to the OVA file.

  3. Enter the Name of the Virtual machine.

  4. Select the Datastore in which to store the virtual machine files and click Next.

  5. Select the format (Thick / Thin) in which to store the Virtual Disks.

  6. Select the Networks the deployed machine should use.

  7. Click on Finish.

  8. This will start deploying the template.

  9. Click Close when the deployment is completed.

  10. Right click on the Virtual machine and Power ON.

Log in to ScaleArc

At this stage, ScaleArc cannot be accessed except through the virtual machine console, since its IP address has not yet been configured.

  1. Log in at the prompt, when the VM is initialized. This is the first time you are logging into ScaleArc. Enter these log in credentials:

    Username:  admin

    Password :  admin@123

  2. Select option 1 to set the IP address, subnet, and gateway of the ScaleArc system.  Enter 1 to apply the settings.

  3. Once the network is set, use the same IP address in your browser to see the ScaleArc user interfaceIf you have any trouble accessing the ScaleArc user interface make sure you have secured the network cabling and the switch/router configuration is in place.

  4. By default, ScaleArc uses a self-signed certificate for communication via HTTPS. Since it is self-signed, the screen displays an untrusted certificate alert while accessing ScaleArc.

  5. Proceed to the ScaleArc License Agreement screen. Read through the license and click Accept EULA.

  6. A successful network set brings up the Welcome screen. You are ready to initialize ScaleArc.

At this time, ScaleArc recommends that you install the appropriate Hypervisor tool set to your ScaleArc VM(s) for Hypervisor layer management. Refer to your Hypervisor management team if you need assistance.

Install ScaleArc with ISO

Create a virtual machine

Use the VMware client to create a new virtual machine:

  1.  Go to File- > New -> Virtual Machine.

  2. Select Custom and click Next.

  3. Choose a name and location for the virtual machine. Then, click Next.

  4. Select a destination storage for the virtual machine files and click Next.

  5. Specify the virtual machine version.  Click Next.

  6. Specify the guest operating system as Linux version CentOS 4/5/6 (64-bit). Click Next.

  7. Select the number of vCPUs for the virtual machine. The total number of vCPUs allocated should be at least two greater than the number licensed for ScaleArc use. To maximize efficiency, the number of vCPUs should be balanced across sockets and cores. For example, an eight vCPU virtual machine should be configured for two sockets with four cores each, or four sockets with two cores each, rather than one socket with eight cores or eight sockets with one core each.

  8. Specify the virtual disk memory size. The minimum memory size should be 4GB (with a recommendation for at least 8GB). Click Next to continue.

  9. Specify the network connections to be used by the virtual machineSpecify the number of NICs you want to connectchoose the VM network, and the adapter as per your environment. Select the latest VMXNET adapter type and enable the Connect at Power On checkbox.

  10. Specify the SCSI controller type you would like to use and click Next.

  11. Select the Create a new virtual disk radio button. Click Next.

  12. Specify the virtual disk size and provisioning policy and click on Next. In a production environment ScaleArc recommends creating 2 virtual disks; one for the OS and the other for ScaleArc logs. The minimum recommended storage is 100GB for the OS disk and 2 TB for the disk containing logs.

If you are using ScaleArc in a demo environment and have any questions about virtual disk sizing please contact ScaleArc technical support for guidance.

  13. Specify the advanced options for the virtual disk. Click Next.

  14. Review the settings for the new virtual machine. Select Edit the virtual machine settings checkbox before completion to add an additional virtual disk for maintaining ScaleArc logs and to connect the ScaleArc ISO to the virtual DVD drive. Click on Continue to begin the process of creating the virtual machine.

  15. Configure the hardware on ScaleArc Virtual Machine.

Select the New CD/DVD itemUnder Device Type section on the right, select the Datastore ISO File option and then browse to the location of the ScaleArc ISO file provided to you. Under Device Status, select the check box Connect at power onClick Add to add the second virtual hard disk for ScaleArc logging.

The recommended size of the ScaleArc logging drive varies depending on the size of the ScaleArc appliance license. Consult KB1651 for the recommended size for the ScaleArc logging disk.

  16.  Click on Finish to complete the virtual machine provisioning.

  17. Scroll down to select the newly created VM; then, click Edit virtual machine settings.

  18. Click Add and then the memory tab to add the second hard disk for ScaleArc logging.

  19. Choose the hard disk option and click Next.

  20. Click on Create a new virtual disk and click Next.

  21. Specify the logging disk size and provisioning policy. We recommended a minimum size of 2 TB. If needed, see ScaleArc sizing for details. Click Next to continue.

  22. Specify the advanced options for the virtual disk and click Next.

  23. Review the selected options and click Finish to add the hardware.

  24. Go to the CD/DVD drive1 and select the Datastore ISO File and click on Browse option.
Make sure you have selected the Connected and Connect at power on options under Device Status

  25. Browse for the ISO for the ScaleArc installation.

  26. Power on the virtual machine and click on the console tab.

  27. Click on Finish to complete the virtual machine provisioning.

Install ScaleArc on VMware

  1. Boot up the machine, you will see the following Welcome to ScaleArc Installer screen on the virtual machine console.

If your hardware has a component that requires a driver that is not part of the Linux installed with ScaleArc, you have the option to provide the correct driver during installation by selecting Specify Driver Disk & Install ScaleArc. Typically the driver is a network or disk controller card, very often on the PCI bus.

  2. Select the Install ScaleArc option on the Welcome to ScaleArc Installer screen.  Hit Enter.

  3. The package installs on the machine.

Log in to ScaleArc
